Knife: This is a real EOD knife designed by a
professional bomb tech, though the knife would work great in any
situation that requires an extremely tough and versatile blade and
handle. Explosive Ordinance Disposal requires many
different chores, cutting and sawing alike and the EOD Bomb Tech that
designed this knife needed to be able to cut, lightly chop, and saw,
with a very aggressive, strong, tough, and highly corrosion
resistant blade. The EOD
knife starts with a 440C high chromium martensitic stainless tool
steel blade. This is the same steel used to make corrosion resistant
ball bearings and I hardened and tempered the blade to a hard 59C
Rockwell, making the blade extremely wear resistant and highly corrosion
resistant. The blade is double edged: double hollow ground with a
tight 3" diameter contact wheel for a very thin edge, yet a very
thick 1/4" spine. The main edge has a great sweeping curve
with enough belly for slicing, and the top or secondary edge has
four inches of my mini-chisel segmented serrations in a style
that I call "Barracuda." This is a
serration pattern that was custom designed for the EOD bomb tech
knife, one that has alternating sizes of hollow cuts spaced with
chisel-edged micro-cutters. The Barracuda is an extremely aggressive serration
style, and cuts though most materials without ripping or tearing.
One of the most interesting characteristics of the blade is the
compound point geometry, specified by the original EOD professional
and designer. The edges meet at a sharpened chisel tip, with a
compound top edge completing the arrangement of cutting edges. This
provides the blade with an extremely tough point for bearing down in
cutting chores that would break the tip of most knives. The entire
blade is mirror-finished for easy cleaning and very high corrosion
resistance, requiring only minimal care. The bolsters are tough,
multi-pinned 304 high nickel, high chromium austenitic stainless
steel, the same material that stainless bolts and fasteners are made
of. The bolsters are mirror polished and smooth for comfort and easy release of any
contaminants and debris, and well-support the blade at the
ricasso and the butt of the handle. The bolsters have deep quillions to lock in
the hand in both forward and reverse grip style, and the rear bolster
has a large 5/16" lanyard hole for extra security if needed. The dovetailed bolsters
bed a pair of nicely finished G10 handle scales, an extremely tough
and durable waterproof fiberglass reinforced epoxy laminate manmade
handle material. The tough scales are secured with 12 through-tang
304 stainless steel pins that reflect the extreme durability of this
knife. Along the edge of this fully tapered tang is deep, bold, and full
filework, with two distinctive patterns that run choil to choil and
improve the grip with a bit of texture. The balance point of the
knife is at the front bolster forefinger position, and the knife
feels very stout and tough in the hand.
Embellishment Option: For the professional EOD
Bomb Technician, included with the price of the knife is the option
to etch the basic, senior, or master level insignia. I would be
honored to do this for you at no charge. I'll even add the graphics
of your unit, name, or designation if you like. See an example of
this embellishment here.
Sheath: The sheath for the knife is a
tension fit model due to the double edges, and is constructed of
double thick (.125") thick kydex thermoformed over a lined and
sealed 5052H32 corrosion-resistant, high-strength aluminum alloy welt frame. The
sheath is mechanically secured with nickel plated steel Chicago
screws for durability, and has a variable and reversible arrangement
of corrosion-resistant die-formed aluminum belt loops. The loops can be mounted
for vertical wear or horizontal wear, and the top loop in horizontal
wear can be tension-fit for tight bonding to webbing or tactical
gear. There is worthwhile security in the sheath with a noticeable
"click" as the knife finds home.
A razor-sharp and extremely durable professional tool for the
dedicated EOD Bomb Tech or anyone who requires a very tough, stout,
and highly durable knife for utility or combat.
