  • Weight: Knife: 1 lb, 6 oz. (624 grams) Sheath: 16.0 oz. (454 grams)
  • Blade: 440C High Chromium Martensitic Stainless Tool Steel, Hardened and Tempered to Rockwell C58, Bead Blasted
  • Bolsters, Fittings: 304 Austenitic Stainless Steel, Bead Blasted
  • Handle: G10 Fiberglass/Epoxy Laminate
  • Sheath: Kydex, Aluminum, Nickel Plated Steel
  • Knife: Custom made for a great client, Hortensius is a dangerous study in curves, point, and edge, the graceful sweeping curve of the blade a combination of shapes from historical knives the world over. With the features of a khukri, a kopesh, and a Bowie knife, Hortensius has a stout recurve blade, fully hollow ground on the main edge, yielding a devastating razor-keen cutting edge. We left plenty of thick spine in the high chromium stainless tool steel blade to support the cutting edge, and added a half length top swage taper ground at a low angle to decrease the point penetration profile. This very aggressive blade has a large front quillon to protect the hand from sliding forward, and the curvaceous rear quillon and handle belly positively lock the hand into the handle in forward grip style. The fully tapered tang keeps the handle weight manageable, allowing more force to be applied to the blade mass at the sweeping belly and center of percussion. This knife has full "royale" filework throughout the blade, tang, and handle for improved grip and handmade distinction. The knife has high chromium, high nickel, zero-care bead-blasted 304 austenitic stainless steel bolsters, dovetailed and fully reinforcing the knife, supporting a through-tang lanyard hole for extra security when needed. The handle material is hard, tough, and durable strong, fiberglass reinforced epoxy laminate, bead blasted for a sure grip. The handle scales are secure with six .125" thick through-tang 304 stainless steel pins, bedded and sealed. The knife has a definitive blade mass with the center of percussion at the belly. The thumb rise assures a solid transfer of forces, and the knife feels substantial and stout in the hand.
  • Sheath: The sheath is one of our combat grade, waterproof, tension fit models, made from double-thickness kydex, 1/4" thick welts of 5052H32 corrosion resistant, high strength aluminum alloy, secured with nickel plated steel Chicago screws. The reversible belt loops will accommodate a standard 1.75" military web utility belt, and should hang on most belts or tactical gear. The die-formed loops can  be positioned anywhere along the welts, and with the reversing capability, translate to eight different locations for versatility.

This is a large, serious, razor keen combat knife ready for the hardest jobs a knife can do.

Thanks, E. L.!
