Knife: The Domovoi is named for the Slavic
house spirit, who insists on keeping your house in order. This
Domovoi is disciplined and neat, as well as colorful and unique and
I enjoyed making it. The
blade profile is a new design of mine, a clipped trailing point in thin and
sharp ATS-34 high molybdenum martensitic stainless tool steel, with
a deep and beautifully mirror polished hollow grind. This steel
remains very tough and durable, resistant to breakage at a high
hardness, and I hardened and tempered this blade to 59HRC for great
wear resistance and longevity of the cutting edge. The grinds are
matched, well-formed and balanced side to side, with nicely radiused
grind terminations and a two third's length top swage. The blade is
fully fileworked with a clean, airy pattern, from swage throughout the tapered tang to the
choil. The knife is bolstered in hand-engraved high nickel, high
chromium 304 austenitic stainless steel, contoured, comfortable, and
mirror polished. The engraving on the bolsters are long leaves,
intertwined, twisted, and overlapped to compliment the fields of the
wide bolster faces. The bolsters are dovetailed and bed a pair of
Dumortierite gemstone handle scales from Africa. This is a new
material; I've use Dumortierite before, but never some as blue as
this. This is a hard and tough aluminum borosilicate, with bits of
micaceous inclusions and natural blues ranging from a light creamy
sky blue to near black. The gem is smoothly polished and will stay
that way for many decades. This is a beautiful stone, and I hope I
can get more of it! The knife handle feels comfortable and solid in
the hand, and the balance point is right at the forefinger location
in a forward grip style.
Sheaths: I decided to offer two sheaths for
this knife, for two completely different looks and arrangements. The
first sheath is a deep, hand-carved, hand-tooled, and hand-dyed
sheath in 9-10 oz. leather shoulder, with leaves matching the
bolster engraving in graduated green to warm yellows carved on the
front, back, and even on the belt loop. This sheath is bold and
striking, and is smooth, contoured, lacquered and sealed,
hand-stitched with polyester sinew. The second sheath is hand-carved
with bundled leaves that match the bolster engravings, dyed in black
with natural highlights of warm browns in bright light. The sheath
has a double strap nickel plated steel snap retention that displays the knife handle and
engraving while protecting the blade. It's hand-stitched with black
nylon, carved and tooled front and back, lacquered and sealed. With
two sheaths, the display and carry of the knife is bold and diverse.
